Candidate project topics scored against the literature that already exists. Evidence levels come live from PubMed via the NCBI E-utilities API; publication lists add Europe PMC for preprints and records PubMed doesn't carry.
Totals cover all years indexed by PubMed. “Recent” means the last 5 years, and the badge reflects that recent count: under 20 is sparse, under 75 emerging, above that active. Every curated topic has some literature, so the gaps are in the population filters rather than in a topic on its own.
